Dodie has just released a tear-jerking music video for her latest single ‘6/10’. Directed by Sammy Paul and choreographed by Deepraj Singh, ‘6/10’ is the first music video to be released from Dodie’s newest EP, You. We originally heard the emotional piano ballad just over a year ago when she posted it on her YouTube channel, doddleoddle. The revamped studio version includes a bunch of Dodie’s fans towards the end of the song, forming a chorus that sings the background lines “I know that you don’t want me here”, “Oh I’ll just call a taxi” and “I’ve gotta get up early tomorrow again.”
For the ‘6/10’ music video, Dodie once again partnered with Sammy Paul, who directed her previous two music videos for ‘Sick of Losing Soulmates’ and ‘Intertwined’. A few of Dodie’s YouTube friends, including Melanie Murphy and Bethan Leadley, also play roles in the video. The video follows Dodie throughout her day as she feels anxious and out of place, expressing her inner thoughts and emotions through subtle actions and choreography for the duration of the video. Many viewers interpreted the recurring theme of Dodie and the other actresses pushing down on their shoulders as a representation of their attempts to repress their anxiety and keep their emotions bottled up.
One of the standout moments of the video is when Dodie leaves an audition waiting room out of anxiety. Several women notice her leave, and we are shown brief scenes of each of them battling their own personal insecurities and anxiety. It is a beautiful reminder that everyone experiences feelings of not being good enough or loneliness, no matter how isolated in your emotions you may feel at a given moment. The video concludes with a powerful shot of Dodie crying in the backseat of a taxi.
‘6/10’ has been a fan favourite ever since it first came out. Dodie says the song is “about not feeling enough… also social anxiety and feeling like a burden.” She describes the title, ‘6/10’, as, “bittersweet in that it’s like average, fine, but nothing special.” She wrote the song based on her own experiences, but many listeners have been able to relate to it on deeply personal levels. We can’t wait to see the other music videos from Dodie’s new EP, especially for the title track ‘You’! It was shot entirely in Paris and was directed by Bertie Gilbert, creator of many short films on YouTube and another friend of Dodie’s. The video will premiere at the Buffer Festival in Toronto this weekend, so we can only hope that it will be out soon!
