Little Mix score new record with 80’s pop album, Get Weird, becoming the first British girl group this decade to have a double platinum certified record. The last British girl group with a double platinum certified album was Girls Aloud, whose 2008 effort Out Of Control sold approximately 796,000+ units in the U.K alone.

Worldwide, the girl group join the ranks of AKB48 and Girls’ Generation, who’ve also had multi-platinum albums in their home country this decade.

Since the start of 2010, we’ve seen many vocal girl groups try to shine through in the worldwide music market. Achievements like these play a strong role in the dominance of girl bands – ironically, it still rings true that girl bands have it harder than boy bands to breakthrough because of gender.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Little Mix discussed women in pop and how they agreed that it’s harder for their gender to break through in the music industry due to sexism, double standards and intimidation.

Thirlwall stated:

We were lucky that we got girls on our side straight away. That is an obstacle that girl bands face is getting a lot of girls to really support you.

With empowerment anthems like ‘Change Your Life’, ‘Little Me’ and ‘Salute, the girl group have obtained a numerous amount of girl fans who are inspired by the four vocalists; guys included.

Similar to the Spice Girls, they each have a distinct personality that allows women and men to relate to them. Either way, success takes hard work and it’s certainly showing for girl groups this decade.

Current global sales for Get Weird stand at 808,000 units.
