Hailing from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, the record-setting five-time Dirt Track World Championship winner was known as the Southern Gentleman.

The racing driver embarked on his journey in 1966, steering a ’56 Chevy that he and his late father, Clarence, had built.

Smith won the five Dirt Track World Championships in 1983, ’85, ’91, ’93, and ’98.

The first four at Pennsboro Speedway were in West Virginia and solidified his status among the sport’s most accomplished figures.

His final significant triumph was on July 11, 2008, at North Alabama Speedway while competing in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

The legendary dirt late model driver, Freddy Smith, passed away at the age of 76.

Born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, on December 22, 1946, he died after a brief battle with leukemia.

Freddy’s son, Jeff Smith, revealed this sad news who affectionately referred to his father as “my real-life hero.”

Jeff disclosed that his father had been diagnosed with AML (leukemia) and had undergone a round of chemotherapy within the past 2-1/2 weeks. Moreover, he was also battling pneumonia.

In the latest post, he revealed that his father passed away. He conveyed a sense of peace in their hearts, highlighting that his father had “given his life to the Lord” on October 3.

Furthermore, Jeff expressed gratitude for the countless prayers that had been sent up. 

Moreover, he kindly requested continued prayers for the peace and comfort of his mother and the entire family during this period.
