CLEARWATER, FLORIDA: The Church of Scientology's guidelines may have reportedly pushed a Florida woman to take her own life. Whitney Mills, a prominent Church of Clearwater member, shot herself because she thought she would be able to "transfer to a new body" because of her serious health problems.

In addition to having a lump on one of her ovaries, that she refused to have removed, 40-year-old Mills was diagnosed with Lyme disease, according to The Underground Bunker. People close to Mills suggested that rather than having a specific illness, "she was truly depressed." Her friends asked for a welfare check on the day of her death after she stopped responding to calls and texts on her mobile phone. Mills shot herself on May 12 and eventually died at Morton Plant hospital a day and a half later, according to the Clearwater Police Department's investigation. She was found unconscious from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after her brother pushed his way into her apartment. He also smelled burnt hair which suggested that she had set herself on fire before shooting herself.

According to the Daily Mail, no unusual circumstances were revealed during the police probe into Mills' death, although a text message she sent to Albertina Mejias, a fellow high-ranking Church member, contained "advice" about what she should do next. She texted in reference to what she thought was the start of Lyme disease. “I wish it wasn't in my brain. It's so annoying that I have it so bad, and so bad mentally. The d of p wants me to come in for an interview," Mills said, as per the text messages obtained by Daily Mail. D of P refers to the Director of Processing. According to Mills, Mejias reportedly informed her that "'there's an assist for someone that is really sick and to drop the body. I asked for that assist."

A sort of spiritual counseling or treatment known as an assist is meant to support a person in overcoming obstacles or injuries related to the body or the mind. It is based on the idea that spiritual counseling and spiritual guidance can speed up the healing process and that the human mind and spirit were capable of mending the body. Mills might have thought she might start over in another body, or as the Church puts it, to "drop" her physical form. In Scientology, the term "drop the body” is referred to abandoning one's physical body through death. Mills was a qualified Operating Thetan Level Eight, or OT 8, which she received in 2019 on the Scientology cruise ship Freewinds. She was also depressed and was being looked after by several different individuals.
